 Who Is Number 1?
Back to Full Blog

These days, it seems hard to find the best at anything in college football. The race for the Heisman is cloudy at best, with another candidate seeming to fall out of the race every week. The # 1 team in the nation last week, USC, lost in a huge upset to Stanford. This week, the consensus # 1 LSU lost in a great game to Kentucky, and # 2 Cal lost at home to unranked Oregon State. So who is the best player in the nation, and ever more important, who is the best team?

As the race for the Heisman Trophy goes, they don’t get much weirder than this year. Colt Brennan has been categorized by many as a system quarterback, but nonetheless puts up huge numbers at Hawaii. Early favorite Brian Brohm dropped out when Louisville’s defense decided to take the rest of the year off. Darren McFadden is a great player, but seems a little bit overhyped. A lot will depend on how teams finish up the season, most of all for Kentucky and Boston College. Matt Ryan got a huge bump in the race this weekend, as BC should open the year at # 2 in the BCS pole. One guy who may have seen his chances evaporate is DeSean Jackson. With Cal losing an easier game at home, and DeSean not making a huge run with the stats, Jackson may have to start looking at the draft to make his mark. With the big win over # 1 LSU, Andre Woodson is probably riding in the two spot right behind McFadden.

As for the race for the BCS championship, it could go to anyone at this point. Ohio State looks good, and should be # 1 in this week’s BCS pole. BC looks good, but not national championship good. South Florida looks like the strongest team in the nation so far, and as long as they don’t trip up, should earn a spot in the championship game. I find it interesting that Hawaii is undefeated and still not in the top 10 ala Boise State last year. Two teams to watch for, who could make charges from the bottom of the pole’s are Arizona State and Kansas. Illinois, who is still a great young team despite this week’s loss, but was taking the thunder away from other teams having surprising seasons. Both Kansas and Arizona State have very strong teams, and with a couple of big wins each, could land in a BCS Bowl. In the end, this year has been a crazy one in college football, and could be a complete mess by the end of the year.
